American Hotel (Psychic Temple) Rehabilitation
Long Beach, CALIFORNIA
Built in 1905, the Psychic Temple is a Long Beach Historic Landmark. The three-story building was originally constructed with unreinforced brick masonry walls. The space was split to house 15,000 square feet of offices on the top two levels while the ground floor and basement now offer 4,500 square feet of retail and restaurant space. MHP seismically strengthened the building by providing new steel framing and special concentric braced frames. In an effort to preserve as much of the building as possible, the existing façade was maintained, and the URM walls were tied to the steel substructure.
