CSULA PLAYHOUSE SEISMIC RETROFIT

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

California State University, Los Angeles engaged MHP Structural Engineers to correct structural and seismic deficiencies at State Playhouse, a two-story, 60,500-square-foot theater constructed in the 1950s. The work included upgrade of deficient anchorage of long span roof trusses and anchorage of the wall to the roof systems.

Included on the CSU Seismic Priority List as a Priority I Building, the structure posed significant health and safety hazards prior to its retrofit. Limited seismic strengthening was previously completed in 2008 using through bolts. MHP completed the new strengthening design to improve building safety and replaced the previously installed through bolts with epoxy anchors, which are easier to maintain and more aesthetically pleasing.
