CSULB engaged a collaborative design-build team including MHP, ZGF Architects and MATT Construction to create a new central location for student learning and gathering. The new 34,000-square-foot, three-story, steel-framed building includes classrooms, collaboration spaces and a 240-person capacity conference facility with operable partitions for conversion into three smaller rooms as needed. The first floor also features a catering kitchen, student vending area, indoor lobby, elevators and restrooms. The second and third floors include classrooms, common restrooms and utility rooms.

MHP evaluated several options for the lateral-force-resisting system, with buckling-restrained braced frames (BRBFs) selected for cost-effectiveness and minimal architectural impact. To mitigate seismic-induced settlement on a site with high liquefaction, MHP’s design included a structural slab-on-grade spanning to auger-cast deep pile foundations.

The building incorporates natural ventilation, in-slab radiant heating and cooling and other energy-efficient features. The project marks the first Net-Zero Energy Classroom building on a CSU campus and achieved USGBC’s LEED Platinum status.
