Orange Coast College Student Housing

COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA

Funded through a public-private partnership, Orange Coast College (OCC) began development of a wood-framed, four-story student housing complex in October 2018. Led by developer Servitas, the project team includes The Scion Group (operator), Moss Construction (GC), HPI Architects (AOR) and MVE + Partners (design architect). As Structural Engineer of Record, MHP managed the ground-up structural design process and will continue to provide construction support through the project’s completion.

Situated near the Northwest corner of OCC’s main campus, the project design consists of a multi-building, 320,000-square-foot residential complex. Most unit layouts will stack vertically throughout except for ground-floor common areas, second-floor bridging elements, and fourth-floor social balconies.

The buildings consist of Type 5 light-frame construction with exposed structural steel accents. Structural steel is also utilized for community balconies, bridges and to support a two-story glass curtainwall at the main entrance lobby. Exterior finish materials include stucco/cement plaster, cement siding and metal panel accents.
