Our Throwback Thursday highlight this week is the award-winning Laguna Beach Festival of Arts.

MHP teamed with Bauer Architects for the renovation of the world-renowned Laguna Festival of Arts grounds and frontage/façade along Laguna Canyon Road. MHP provided structural engineering design and construction support services for the phased project. The frontage/façade project featured a new ticket office situated within a concrete and steel structure with a horizontal-trussed roof, tall decorative steel frontage walls, and rammed-earth walls that complement the canyon aesthetic.

The grounds project includes a new gift shop and restrooms, a stage, art sales/display pavilions (designed by Fabri-Tech and reviewed by MHP), and associated site work within the festival area. Unique soil conditions and specimen-quality trees required several different foundation systems, including mat-footings and deep cast-in-place piers.

The project was completed in 2015 at a cost of $12 million and was awarded the AIA Orange County Design Award, the Laguna Beach Beautification Council Design Award, and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Design Award for Historical Renovation Project of the Year.

Our lead engineers on the project were Principal, Lance Kenyon, M.S., S.E. Associate, Project Manager, Kyle White, S.E.
